Something about Devon
The county of Devon take its name from the Celtic tribe that lived there - the Dumnonii, whose name means 'the deep ones' perhaps because they lived in the steep valleys of Devon or were known for their mining. The old English form of the tribal name was Definas.
Devon includes the western end of Exmoor and the whole of the granite mass of Dartmoor, the highest land in the country.
